The RD credential is recognized both nationally and internationally for its rigorous standards and criterion. Students must apply and be accepted to an accredited/approved Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) to complete additional coursework (20+ credit hours) required and pass a DPD Exit Exam before applying to a six or nine-month (900+ hour) internship. Internships are highly competitive and acceptance is not guaranteed. Passing the four-hour national registration exam is last step of the process. Afterwards, 75 Continuing Education (CE) credits are required every five years to maintain current RD status. Currently, the RD credential is required to meet most individual state-to-state licensing/certification criterion for nutritionist and dietitians with undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nutrition. Washington State was one of the first states to create "certification" for both dietitians (RD required) and nutritionists (MS or PhD in Nutrition required; RD optional).
