Psychology Program Helps Student Find Calling
Betsy Petrie, 40, is in the second year of the BS in psychology program. A lifelong local resident who started a family before attending college, she says studying at Bastyr has helped her find balance in her life and discover her calling. What brought you to Bastyr University? One reason I returned to school is that I wanted to be able to help my daughters, now 11 and 15, with their schoolwork. I heard about the university through its health center. I had a positive experience there and became interested in nutrition and self-empowerment as ways to improve health. I enrolled in classes at Bellevue Community College, thinking I might major in nutrition. Yet, I enjoyed my sociology classes more. Later I learned Bastyr University had the perfect degree program to encompass my interests-a BS in psychology with a health concentration. Has the program met your expectations? Yes. The personal attention from the instructors and the interaction with other students are what have made Bastyr University so wonderful. Everyone helps each other and gets to know each other. The research end of it is incredible, too. Dr. Lester, who teaches statistics and research classes, is the best teacher I have come across. What are your future plans? I will get my master's degree in psychology either from Antioch University in Seattle or University of Washington. After that, I would like to write programs for schools to help them work effectively with students with learning disabilities. I really click with children in grades seven through nine, so I would eventually like to have a private practice working with that population. ![]()
