Graduate Profile: Marie Wakefield

Marie Wakefield With all of my heart and soul, I know that choosing to become a naturopath and midwife are meant to be a part of my journey here on Earth. As far back as I can remember I have always had this pull towards the medical profession. I have a great desire to work with people and to partner with them in the process of improving their health. The thought of being a continuous participant in the miraculous process of pregnancy and birth is the ultimate gift I could receive.

I am truly saddened by the trend childbirth is taking in our country. Women are expecting and even requesting induction, epidurals and other interventions. I think it is a shame that doctors are losing faith in the wisdom of nature and the process of letting the body do what is natural. These interventions are all wonderful to have when medically necessary, however, I am enraged when they are used to simply speed things along or to make the process more convenient. One of my goals is to educate women about the process of pregnancy and childbirth, so that they know what to expect and to prevent them from getting scared and lost in the process. Another goal is to provide them with proper support during birth, so that they can manage the intensity of the experience without letting pain and fear take over.

My vision is to partner with couples before they get pregnant to aid them in becoming as healthy as possible before they conceive, to continue care throughout the pregnancy, birth and postpartum. I get excited thinking about working with new parents and teaching them how to raise a healthy child, while at the same time improving their quality of life as well.
