Frequently Asked Questions

What are the students like?

The student population is diverse. In the academic year 2005-06, students in degree programs ranged in age from 20 to 64. The average age of undergraduates is 30, while the average age of graduate and professional students is 31. About 25 percent of the student body are from the Pacific Northwest. International students represent 18 countries. Two-thirds of the student body are women. All undergraduate students are junior-level transfers, with an average incoming GPA of 3.3.
Over 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students were enrolled in Bastyr University's health sciences degree programs in 2005-2006. According to our student enrollment estimates:

  • Master of science programs: 203 students
  • Naturopathic doctor programs: 491 students
  • Bachelor's degree programs: 264 students
  • Certificate programs: 79 students.
  • Applied behavioral science (LIOS) programs: 125 students

Is there university housing?

Yes. University housing is located on the fourth and fifth floors of the main campus building. For more information, visit our housing section.

Do you require standardized tests for admission?

No. We believe that standardized tests give no additional information beyond academic grades. We consider a number of factors besides academic performance, such as personality, motivation and relevant experience.

What are the bookstore and library like at Bastyr?

The University Bookstore carries all required and recommended books for courses. A wide selection of reference books are also available, plus university T-shirts, sweatshirts and glassware. You may reach the bookstore at (425) 602-3026.
The Bastyr library has over 12,000 volumes, 275 journal subscriptions, extensive audiovisual materials, and a continuously-expanding collection of materials on alternative medicine and natural health. Contact the library at (425) 602-3020 or via e-mail.

Who was John Bastyr?

John Bastyr, ND, was President Emeritus of National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR, and teacher and mentor for the founding physicians of Bastyr University. Dr. Bastyr was one of the true heroes of naturopathic medicine, an advocate of the profession throughout his career and an inspirational healer. Does Bastyr University have religious affiliations?

No. Bastyr's philosophy is based on the healing power of nature, which has spiritual connotations for some.

What is the weather really like in Seattle?

Winters in the Pacific Northwest are mild -- usually cloudy with some rain showers and drizzle. Big storms and other forms of extreme weather are rare. "Northwesterners" are big on rain gear because nothing keeps them indoors (except studying).

How far is the university from Seattle?

The campus is 16 miles from downtown Seattle and about five miles from the city limits. Public transportation is accessible to and from the campus. Find out more about Bastyr's location in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, just miles from Seattle.

Is the university's teaching clinic on campus?

Our new and revitalized teaching clinic, Bastyr Center for Natural Health, is located 10 miles from the main campus in the Wallingford district of Seattle.

Do you have online or distance learning courses?

We currently have no online or distance learning courses, although we may offer some courses in future.

Can I take a course if I'm not an enrolled, or matriculated, student?

Yes. You may take an undergraduate, non-professional course if you meet the pre-requisite requirements and if room is available in the class. Fully matriculated students receive priority enrollment. To enroll in a graduate or professional course, you must obtain prior approval from the dean of students or department chair. Contact the registrar's office at (425) 602-3089 for additional information.

Do you provide campus tours?
