I would highly recommend Bastyr University to anyone who has a passion for health and nutrition and is looking for a challenge. At Bastyr, you learn all of the rigorous biochemical science taught at other universities, but you also learn complementary and alternative therapies. Bastyr doesn't just focus on abstract concepts — you always learn about food first. You have the opportunity to take classes in culinary skills and therapeutic cooking, making you a true expert not only in the science of food but in its preparation and use as medicine.
Bastyr has the only nutrition program I know of that allows students to see patients under the supervision of clinical faculty, which uniquely prepares students for dietetic internships. My experience with patients at Bastyr Center for Natural health provided me many skills in health counseling I could never have learned from a book or sitting in a classroom.
Bastyr is a small school where all of your professors know your name. The faculty and staff in the nutrition department really strive to put students and their education first. The physical environment also feels supportive. I love driving onto campus every day. I always felt like I was about to go camping or hiking. When stress started to build, I could always go for a hike in the woods to clear my mind.
Having recently graduated, I hope to become an outpatient dietitian with a focus on food allergies, cancer and diabetes. I would also like to teach cooking and nutrition classes and write articles for magazines and newspapers. I feel confident the education I received at Bastyr has prepared me to reach my goals and be successful in my field.
At Bastyr, I made lifelong friends, gained knowledge and proficiency in nutritional science, and worked harder than ever before — and I loved every moment.
