It's Time to Prepare for Fall 2009 Enrollment
Now is a good time to begin thinking about enrolling in a Bastyr program for fall 2009. Have you finalized your educational plans and reviewed the application process? If you need more information, it may be helpful to consult with an admissions advisor about the program, the application process or the required prerequisites. We offer many ways to meet with us, including a phone or in-person appointment, a face-to-face visit with a traveling advisor in your region, or by attending one of our on-campus events described below. And, for your convenience, we now offer online applications. (If you are still interested in admittance for fall 2008, please contact an admissions advisor today.)

Meet Our Recruiters in Your Region
If you won’t have a chance to visit our campus to meet with one of our admissions advisors, don’t worry — our advisors may be traveling to your area. View our recruiting scheduleto find out when we will be at a location near you. And be sure to keep checking back, as we will add new dates and locations to our schedule throughout the fall.

Find Answers to All Your Questions at "Evening at Bastyr"
Interested in an education in the natural health sciences and need a few more details about it? Attend "Evening at Bastyr" on Thursday, August 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. You will learn more about the prerequisites, the curriculum and the possible career options for all of our degree programs. You'll have the opportunity to hear from students, faculty members, admissions advisors and financial aid officers, who will provide you with detailed answers to your pressing questions. Sign up today.

Popular ND "Bastyr Experience" Event to Be Offered More Frequently
Due to high demand, we will now be offering our "Bastyr Experience" event on a quarterly basis. Formerly a twice-yearly event, "Bastyr Experience" provides an opportunity for prospective naturopathic doctoral (ND) students to learn about the program in small, intimate groups. Attendees receive a comprehensive introduction to naturopathic medicine, observe classes, talk with faculty and current students, and even watch a medical case presentation. This summer we held two of these events, which were both booked to capacity, with waiting lists. The next event will take place this fall on Friday, November 21. RSVP today.

Incoming Student Profile: Kimberley Wyckham Travels Around the World to Find Bastyr
Kimberley Wyckham, an incoming herbal sciences student from British Columbia, found Bastyr University in an unusual way: by journeying around the world. In response to a strong inner prompting, Wyckham left college to travel to Asia and several other regions. Meeting with a variety of healers and spiritual guides, her health improved and her understanding of holistic healing increased. Eventually she met a Bastyr University faculty member who helped her discover her calling: To study herbal sciences and naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University. Learn more about Wyckham's journey to Bastyr.

Bastyr Goes Greener
As part of Bastyr's mission to improve the health and well-being of the community, the University constantly works to minimize its impact on the environment. Last summer, the University launched a transportation initiative to encourage alternative commuting options. Recently, our teaching clinic, Bastyr Center for Natural Health, achieved LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainable energy and material use. Additionally, our vegetarian cafeteria, which offers a menu that is 65 percent organic, just adopted a new composting system by partnering with a local recycling company. The cafeteria has incorporated new compostable to-go containers and utensils as well as low-flow sprayers and aerators. And, looking toward the future, the cafeteria staff plans to upgrade to more energy-efficient equipment as budget allows. Find out more about our cafeteria's goals to become more sustainable.

For ND Students, it's Smart to Start School in the Summer
Although the majority of new students begin school at Bastyr in the fall, starting classes during the summer can be a smart strategy — particularly for naturopathic doctoral (ND) students. It helps facilitate a smoother transition into academic life and decreases students' overall credit load for upcoming years. Learn more about the advantages of starting in the summer, as explained by incoming ND student Brenden Witte.

What Makes Humans Happy? Find out at "In Pursuit of Happiness" Event
What exactly is happiness, and is it possible to attain? Explore the answers to these questions by attending an engaging lecture, "In Pursuit of Happiness," at Bastyr on Wednesday, November 12 at 7 p.m. Sponsored by Bastyr's Department of Counseling and Health Psychology, this free lecture will include a conversation on personal and cultural concepts of happiness as well as recent research on the topic. Bastyr associate professor Tiffany Reiss, PhD, will guide the discussion. Learn more about this event.

DAOM Students Witness Major Earthquake While Studying in China
For the seven Bastyr doctoral of acupuncture and Oriental medicine (DAOM) students who were studying in China when the 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck on May 12, 2008, the concept of studying abroad took on a new dimension. Not only did the students spend 10 weeks observing the medical approaches of doctors there, but they also gained a rare glimpse inside Chinese culture by watching the country respond to a devastating natural disaster. Read about our students' experiences in China during the time of the earthquake.

Discover Modern Herbal Applications at American Herbalist Guild Conference
If you want to learn about the latest applications of herbal medicines in an intensive format, don't miss this year's American Herbalist Guild National Symposium October 24-26 in Redmond, Washington. This year's theme, Botanical Medicine in Oncology, Immunity and Chronic Illness, is sure to provide relevant information to practitioners, students and the public alike.
