DC FLI: Naturopathic Students Meet with Congress to Support Medicare Inclusion

Naturopathic medicine supporters from around the country convened in Washington DC for the annual DC Federal Legislative Initiative (DC FLI) in April. DC FLI lets members of Congress learn about the benefits of naturopathic medicine and upcoming legislative bills to support the profession. This year’s event focused on legislation to integrate naturopathic doctors as Medicare health care providers and to implement a second annual Naturopathic Medicine Awareness Week.

The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) organized the three-day conference that brought together more than 120 supporters from 42 states. Participants spent the first two days reviewing legislative priorities and preparing to meet with elected representatives and health staffer members. On Monday April 28, the group took their message to Capitol Hill, visiting 130 congressional offices to convey the value of naturopathic medicine.

The trip closed with a Whole Health Reception on Capitol Hill that provided another opportunity for naturopathic medicine supporters and Congress members to meet and learn from each other.  Find more information about the 2014 DC FLI and proposed legislation from AANP.

More than 50 Bastyr students participated in DC FLI.
