Searching for botanical research in MEDLINE can be challenging. See our research guide, "Complementary and Alternative Medicine Research Using MEDLINE," for some useful tips.

Electronic Databases:

AMED (Allied and Complementary Medicine Database)
Indexes 596 scholarly journals relating to complementary and alternative medicine, including botanical medicine.

Drugs & Pharmacology, a module of EMBASE, contains citations (with abstracts) to international research studies on herbal medicines and pharmacology, many of which are not in MEDLINE. (Available only at UW Libraries.)
HerbClip online (American Botanical Council) compiles summaries and articles on medicinal plants from an array of media sources, including scholarly journals. (See a library staff person for access information.)
Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database
A web-based database of herbal and dietary supplements that provides extensive scientific information on mechanism of action, safety, effectiveness and contraindications.

Natural Standard
An evidence-based database that compiles and grades primary research studies for botanical and other complementary and alternative medicine therapeutics.

The Library has an extensive collection of videos that can be checked out, including:

Foundations in Herbal Medicine series by Low-Dog, Tieraona, M.D. This series includes multi-tape modules on subjects such as Herbal Pharmacology, the Endocrine System, the Respiratory System, etc.

Edible & Medicinal Herbs by Tilgner, Sharol, Dr.
Little Medicine: The Wisdom to Avoid Big Medicine by Meuninck, Jim.
Sexual Encounters of the Floral Kind Photographer, Morris, Sean. Investigates the diversity of plant adaptations for pollination with an emphasis on unusual coevolved relationships with animal pollinators.

We also have hundreds of audiotapes you can check out including the GAIA Conference tapes from 1991 to the present. An index of audiotapes, listing them by speaker, conference and keywords, is available at the Circulation Desk.

Internet Sites:

American Herbal Products Association
"AHPA's mission is to promote the responsible commerce of herbal products." AHPA is a trade association dealing solely with the herbal products industry and they dedicate all their resources to "furthering the responsible sale and use of herbs and herbal products."
Dr. Duke's Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases
Compiled by Dr. Jim Duke, an ethnobotanist formerly with the U.S. Agricultural Research Service, this database contains detailed information on chemicals and activities of various plants and their ethnobotanical uses. It does not contain specific therapeutics information.
Henrietta's Herbal Homepage
"Herbal medicine and culinary herbs: one of the oldest and largest herbal information sites on the net." Includes electronic versions of historical texts.

Herbmed and HerbMedPro
Provides categorized links to information on various medicinal plants including cultivation data and photographs, as well as MEDLINE abstracts for safety, efficacy and interactions studies. HerbMedPro is a fee-based version that is updated more frequently and includes more substances than the free HerbMed version.

IBIDS (NIH)
Produced by the Office of Dietary Supplements, National Institutes of Health IBIDS contains citations with abstracts to articles published in international scientific journals on the topic of dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, herbal and botanical supplements.  Users can search either the peer-reviewed, consumer or the full database using keywords.

Internet Directory for Botany
A well-maintained site from the Botanical Museum, Finnish Museum of Natural History in Helsinki, the Directory’s categories include ethnobotany, herbal medicine and poisons.  Hundreds of links are compiled, many of which are accompanied by useful annotations.
Longwood Herbal Task Force
The LHTF was organized in the fall of 1998 by Boston Children's Hospital, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute to provide reliable information on herbs and dietary supplements. In-depth monographs have extensive references to scientific studies; thorough patient education sheets on various botanical substances are available.
Southwest School of Botanical Medicine
This site, compiled by the herbalist, Michael Moore, contains a wealth of links to botanical images, texts and other useful information including scanned versions of many historical texts.
