Herb & Food Fair 2006: Ancient & Modern Wisdom Unite
Owing partly to favorable weather, the eighth annual Bastyr University Herb and Food Fair was a huge success. The university welcomed over 2,000 people to campus on June 3rd for a day of herb- and food-related activities. The visitors were treated to many sights, sounds, tastes and smells. Particularly popular every year is the cooking demonstrations. It was standing-room-only in the beautiful teaching kitchen as guests learned creative ways of preparing whole grains, unique vegetarian entrees, sushi, as well as how to cook with healing herbs. But the question remains: were people really learning cooking techniques, or just waiting for the samples afterwards?
The focal point of this annual fair is our medicinal herb garden, which grows bigger and more beautiful each year. The tours, which are guided by either a faculty member or an advanced student, are always popular. Participants, under the careful instruction of a tour guide, stop to taste, smell and touch the plants while they learn about medicinal herbs and the healing power of nature. This year's theme was "Ancient & Modern Wisdom Unite," and had a special focus on acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, reflecting the diverse background of keynote speakers Michael and Lesley Tierra. Michael and Lesley are internationally recognized herbalists, authors and acupuncturists. Michael Tierra, LAc, OMD, is the founder of the American Herbalists Guild and author of numerous books on health and herbal healing. He is also co-founder of the American School of Botanical Medicine. Lesley Tierra, LAc, AHG, joined her husband as a renowned practicing acupuncturist, herbalist and author. She is a founding professional member of the American Herbalists Guild, and has also written or co-authored several books.
Several other experts presented talks and held workshops on a variety of herb-related subjects and plenty of visitors took the opportunity to educate themselves. Others simply strolled through the vendor displays, stopped and enjoyed the live entertainment, had lunch in our cafeteria and indulged in a myriad of family-friendly activities. All in all, it was a splendid day at Bastyr and a delight to welcome our neighbors, friends, fellow gardeners, and those interested in learning more about natural medicine. Next year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever. We hope to see you there. For more information, contact the Media and Public Relations department at (425) 602-3107.
