Bastyr Alumni partners with Cauldron Broths to produce a line of SIBO friendly broths, now available at PCC Markets.

Thousands of Americans suffer from chronic digestive issues, which can make finding non-triggering foods a challenge. Conditions such as Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) often bring about debilitating symptoms such as abdominal pain, stomach cramping, bloating and gas. Those that suffer from these conditions can often feel isolated as the number of “safe” foods becomes smaller and smaller.

Bastyr University alumna Angela Pifer, MS (‘05), FMN, has dedicated her 12-year career as a Certified Nutritionist to helping patients with digestive issues. Affectionately know as SIBO Guru, (siboguru.com) Pifer runs a thriving private practice, and five years ago she shifted her focus exclusively to the most stubborn of SIBO cases. She is a cofounder of GutRx Gurus, a team of experts that focus on creating nutritionally balanced recipes and meal plans that don’t trigger gut symptoms. Each member of GutRx Gurus receives access to a database of 600+ recipes, which simplifies the hassle of finding “gut-friendly” meals. Members also have access to a community forum to network with other SIBO sufferers, as well as to attend virtual cooking classes.

“I was trained in functional medicine before ‘functional medicine’ was a buzzword,” Pifer shares. “Whole food focused is how we support our patients.”

The Nutrition degree programs at Bastyr University focus on the study of foods by looking at their individual components and how they affect the human body. It is with these whole food principles in mind that the Angela partnered with Cauldron Broths to produce a line of delicious, SIBO-friendly bone broths. Pifer and her team created three flavors (chicken, beef and bone marrow) without the fermentable ingredients, such as garlic and onion, that can trigger SIBO symptoms. Each flavor of GutRx Guru Broth contains ingredients such as carrots, celiac root, ginger, and Kombu, and Icelandic seaweed. Each serving contains 10-12 grams of healing collagen protein per cup, which is very high for a broth. All three broth varieties can be found at stores around the Puget Sound area, including select Met Markets, Co-Ops, and PCC Markets.
