Current Roles

Dr. Sturgeon is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Acupuncture & East Asian Medicine at Bastyr University. He is also a quality assurance manager and FDA compliance consultant at Mayway USA, an importer and marketer of Chinese herbs and herbal products.

  • Master of Oriental Medicine from the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2014

Past Experience

Before coming to Bastyr, Dr. Sturgeon was a core faculty member at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, where he also served as faculty council chair and a member of the college’s board of directors. 

Dr. Sturgeon is the former president and CEO of the Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine College in Berkeley, California. He first started his involvement in the administration and teaching of Oriental medicine at the New York College of Wholistic Health, Education, and Research (now New York College of Health Professions), where he was clinic director and herb chair. He then became clinic dean at the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Seattle. He has also served as a site visitor for the Accreditation Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), participating in site visits and self-studies at 14 AOM campuses around the country. 

He has practiced acupuncture and Oriental medicine in New Mexico, North Carolina, New York and Washington. He completed his doctoral program at American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco in June 2014, with a capstone project on the use of sulfur and sulfites to preserve Chinese herbs.

Over the last four years, Dr. Sturgeon has gained significant expertise in herbal preparation and botanical identity. Recently, he developed a program for Mayway and its suppliers to deal with the issue of pesticides in cultivated Chinese herbs.

Personal Interests

Dr. Sturgeon has been a life-long student of martial arts. He studied Wah Lum Kung Fu with International Grand Master P. Chan; Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan with Patrick Watson, Jane & Bataan Faigo, and Brent Neely; and qigong with various teachers including Roger Jahnke, Ken Cohen, and Suzanne Friedman. Five years ago, Skye completed certification training in medical qigong with Suzanne at AIMC Berkeley.

An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Sturgeon likes to spend his spare time sailing, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, wildlife and bird watching, and fly fishing. His other interests include cooking, chess and photography.
