The Presidential Search Committee of Bastyr University, the first accredited school of its kind in the nation, invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations of candidates in its search for the college’s fifth president.
The successful candidate will join a diverse, inclusive and collaborative community of faculty and staff who are committed to shaping students into well-educated, thoughtful natural health leaders focused on transforming the health and well-being of the human community.
Our Presidential Search process is moving forward, and I wanted to report on your Search Committee’s (SC) work in the last few weeks, and what’s coming up.
Our consultant Jan Asnicar has been working with us to put in place the comprehensive series of meetings, now underway, to collect input and guidance from our community to inform our Search Committee efforts. Yesterday we spent several hours at our San Diego campus in three meetings with staff, students and faculty. This was an invaluable opportunity to hear first-hand about the challenges and opportunities identified by participants, and hear their views on the attributes they would like in our next President. The San Diego campus is experiencing a lot of issues any new campus does, and at the same time is poised for exciting new opportunities in the months and years ahead. It was very helpful information. Today Jan met for several hours with the Board of Trustees, who are meeting here at our annual Retreat, and got their ideas and suggestions.
Next week is when we conduct up to nine more community meetings at the Kenmore campus, the BCNH clinic, and the AOMA campus in Austin. I attach the schedule for our 13 meetings overall, and the location for each meeting. I want to emphasize one more time the importance of your participation in these community meetings, as they will play a key role in the type of leader we seek and the refinement of the Bastyr story.
The process of finding, interviewing and selecting finalists for our next President is one that requires great care and diligence. The reality is that many of the candidates whom our Search Committee reviews and gets excited about are likely already working in high profile leadership roles at another academic institution or organization. We will need to persuade them to consider moving over to Bastyr. One thing these people are likely going to be unwilling to do is to meet in a public setting at any of our campuses along with several other finalist candidates, until they have a signed contract. Doing so could unintentionally end their present employment and damage their career prospects. I raise this as I know there is a natural interest and desire for many in our community to meet the finalists identified by the SC. In fact, we did so in 2014 at that stage. If it turns out all the finalists are willing to go in front of public meetings, then we will do so. But it seems more likely that one or more, for very understandable reasons, would be unwilling to do so and as a practical matter would withdraw from further consideration. As the last thing we want to do is lose what may be our best candidate(s), we are urging all to at this time to tell us what kind of leader with what skills they feel is most important for the SC and Board to choose. For all these reasons, try to show up at one of the meetings and share your views. For those who as a practical matter simply cannot make any of these meetings, in a week we will distribute an electronic survey to everyone for you to provide anonymous input to the SC. You are also free to contact our Search Consultant directly, and we will share her contact data with you at the end of next week.
Over the past two weeks we have held numerous forums at each of our campus locations (AOMA, BU California, Bastyr Center for Natural Health, and BU Kenmore) to gather feedback from you regarding the initiatives you view as most critical at the University and what qualities you desire in a new president. We thank all of you who were able to attend these forums.
For those of you who weren’t able to attend the forums and who want to provide feedback we have provided the survey below. By clicking on the link you can provide feedback similar to what was gathered at the campus forums. This survey was developed by Bastyr’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness in conjunction with Jan Asnicar, Search Consultant at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates. Your feedback on the survey is vital as it reflects the priorities and the values of the Bastyr community and will assist us in developing a position profile that will be used in recruiting candidates for a new President.
The survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. Please be assured that your responses are anonymous. The survey will be closed at 5:00pm PST Friday, Oct. 20th.

Presidential Search Committee has just concluded its second major task, as we have completed the community input process at each of our campuses. For your information, we attach the Summary Report of our Community Input on the two key questions posed by our Search Consultant, at each of the meetings and in the electronic survey. Over 300 people participated in this process, and it gave us a very rich range of impressions on the Bastyr experience and potential.
Armed with this information, the Committee approved a Presidential Prospectus, a copy of which is also attached. This document reflects what we heard from stakeholders during our forums and also provides an overall summary of the University, its past experience, and future potential, so that prospective candidates have good information to consider.
Our next step is very important, and we could use your help. Starting November 2, and for the next 6-8 weeks, we will be reaching out to build a pool of qualified candidates. first step is identifying their level of interest and outlining how their interests might benefit the university at this time. While we are doing this work, you will not hear much from us.
In recent weeks, many have shared suggestions about how we might “socialize” the Prospectus and invite interested and qualified candidates to step into the application process. Here is where we can use your help. After the start of the year, the Search Committee will begin their review of qualified candidates. Another update will follow soon after. It is our goal to have this process completed in early spring.
