Diane Helsel is a core faculty member and associate professor in the Department of Nutrition & Exercise Science.
Dr. Helsel was a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh for more than a decade. While there, she collaborated in research that focused on behavior change for weight loss and management. Dr. Helsel has been the recipient of the following awards: Pennsylvania Dietetic Association’s Outstanding Dietetics Educator and Area 6 Dietetic Educators of Practitioners Outstanding Dietetics Educator. Prior to academia, Dr. Helsel worked as a registered dietitian in clinical and community nutrition and nutrition consultation.
Dr. Helsel teaches in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. Her courses include Introduction to Food Science, Experimental Foods Lecture/Lab, Food Science Lecture/Lab, Nutritional Supplements and Herbs, and Nutritional Counseling.
Dr. Helsel's professional interests include nutrition counseling for behavior change, behavioral weight management, and food science. She is a registered dietitian and holds the following certifications: Board-Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics and ACSM Health/Fitness Instructor(SM) Certified.
Dr. Helsel is a proponent of active learning and uses a variety of methods to encourage cooperative and collaborative participation in the classroom. She strives to enhance learner outcomes using a positive delivery approach.
