How Sticky is Your Blood?

This case-control study will recruit individuals with a diagnosis of MS and healthy controls. Individuals will be asked to come to Bastyr Clinical Research Center for a single study visit, at which time dietary intake, current medications and supplements, other medical diagnoses, and coagulation will be evaluated.

Intranasal Glutathione in Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD) is considered a progressive and irreversible neurodegenerative disease. Current therapies improve disease symptoms, however none alter the underlying degenerative course. Research suggests the loss of brain glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, is one of the earliest changes to occur in the brain of PD patients and the magnitude of glutathione depletion parallels the severity of PD. This study will look at the use of intranasal glutathione in PD patients to determine safety, tolerability, and the impact on PD symptoms.

Systemic iron changes, haptoglobin phenotypes and Parkinson's disease risk

This study explores if changes in serum iron levels and iron binding proteins are associated with an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease. This study focuses on iron changes due to the presence of particular phenotypes, or lifestyle factors, or the interplay between genetic and environmental factors.

Healthy participants were recruited as well as patients affected with Parkinson's disease, in a case/controls study.

Pending in 2013:
Publications; NIH grant funding to expand the research study.

Evidence for correlations between distant intentionality and brain function in recipients: a functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis

This study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology, demonstrated that distant intentionality (DI), defined as sending thoughts at a distance, is correlated with an activation of certain brain functions in the recipients. Eleven healers who espoused some form for connecting or healing at a distance were recruited from the island of Hawaii. Each healer selected a person with whom they felt a special connection as a recipient for DI. The recipient was placed in the MRI scanner and isolated from all forms of sensory contact from the healer.
