The Department of Midwifery is presently seeking an experienced instructor for academic year 2018-19 to teach Clinical Skills fall quarter for the Year 2 students. This 1 credit course, part 3 out of 5 quarters, will focus on those skills that are used in intrapartum care. The material will be presented as a series of workshops with most of the course work done on-site, but some on-line assignments. Topics taught include:

  1. OOH Neonatal Resuscitation workshop

  2. Vaginal exams

  3. AROM

  4. Hand maneuvers for catching baby

  5. Episiotomy

  6. Suturing

  7. Estimating blood loss

  8. Treating postpartum hemorrhage

  9. Maternal shock

  10. Catheterization

Position type: 

We seek a midwife with extensive clinical experience in out-of-hospital settings who has demonstrated interest and skill in teaching hands-on skills to student midwives.

Instructor Qualifications:

  • Licensure/certification as a CPM, CNM and/or LM. Masters level credential preferred but not required.

  • Teaching experience and/or a commitment to developing teaching skills.

  • Significant experience in clinical midwifery practice essential in home or birth center setting. Active, current midwifery practice is also preferred.

  • Continuing education, self-directed study, or relevant experience with course content.

  • Excellent communication skills in person and on-line.

  • Preference given to applicants who have served as clinical preceptors for the Department of Midwifery with evidence of good rapport with students.


  • Access to and relevant skills with computer, internet and email.

  • Available to be off-call during on-site sessions (this class meets once monthly at Bastyr University, Kenmore, WA,).

  • Available for online learning activities with students and faculty communications.

  • Other requirements as specified in Department of Midwifery Adjunct Faculty Contract.
