Bastyr University, a private regionally accredited institution, is accepting applications for a faculty position in the Department of Midwifery in the School of Natural Health Arts & Sciences at its in Kenmore campus, 15 miles north of Seattle, Washington.

 

The Department of Midwifery is presently seeking an experienced instructor to teach Counseling for the Childbearing Year 2, a course that is offered once per year in the spring quarter. This course is the second in a series of four counseling courses in the midwifery curriculum. This class addresses particular psychological issues that may be of concern during pregnancy and the postpartum, specifically: substance use and abuse, interpersonal violence, sexual abuse history, and eating disorders.

 

We seek an instructor with two or more years of clinical experience in providing services to pregnant and postpartum clients, either through the provision of midwifery care or through engagement in the counseling professions. Applicants should have a comprehensive knowledge of the topics covered in this course.

Required

 

  • Master’s level credential in a counseling field (i.e. psychology, social work, counseling, etc.) with demonstrated expertise in issues pertaining to maternal mental health and demonstrated ability to work with midwives and allied birth professionals

OR

 

  • Licensure/certification as a CPM, CNM and/or LM. Master’s level credential preferred but not required. Demonstrable skills in the ability to offer effective counseling are necessary.

 

Preferred

 

  • Prior participation in the Dept of Midwifery Counseling series of courses
  1. as a student who performed with excellence in the class
  2. as a teaching assistant for the class
  3. as a substitute teacher for the class

 

  • Familiarity with and dedication to the way in which the Counseling course series is formatted, beginning with basic counseling skills training (scenarios not necessarily related to midwifery, but which focus on eliciting the technique themselves) and gradually advancing into a combination of skills & informational requirements through the four courses. This would be best understood by someone who has taken the class.

 

 

Requirements

  • Access to and relevant skills with computer, internet and email.
  • Available to be off-call during on-site sessions.
  • Available for online learning activities with students and faculty communications.
