Assistant Gardener (#20-008)

Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist the Garden Supervisor in garden planning, cultivation, maintenance tasks, and serve as an additional resource for questions and information about the garden and plants for the Bastyr community and the public.
  • Assist in all aspects of organic production and restoration including soil building, planning, plant selection, ordering and buying propagules, seed-starting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, pest control, weeding, season extension, expanding and building new beds, clearing and winterizing beds, cover-cropping, harvesting, saving seeds, medicinal herb processing, invasive species removal, PNW ecological restoration, and distributing garden produce on campus.
  • Assist in supervision of work-study personnel and volunteers, and the delegation of labor amongst them.
  • Provide garden tours as requested.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with planning, maintenance, installation, planning and restoration of the Sacred Seeds Ethnobotanical Trail.
  • Assist in oversight and support of workshops held in the garden.
Qualifications: 

Knowledge   

  • Must have experience with larger scale landscape maintenance and planning.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of medicinal and vegetable plants, propagation methods,  

cultivation, harvesting, and medicinal plant processing methods.

  • Must have knowledge of farming/gardening and typical weather patterns in the Pacific NW.
  • Training in native plants, ethnobotany and restoration preferred.
  • Training in organic, biodynamic and/or permaculture methods is helpful.
  • Familiarity with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion concepts as they relate to native plants and farming/gardening is preferred.

Skills and Abilities   

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical/manual tasks in relation to garden maintenance.
  • Ability to operate necessary equipment and tools used to develop, expand & maintain a garden of moderate size.
  • Ability to supervise a team of student gardeners with guidance, clarity & respect.
  • Willingness to expand knowledge and abilities involving growing medicinal plants, food crops and restoration.
  • Construction skills and/or knowledge of basic construction techniques and hardware helpful.
  • Automatic irrigation and/or knowledge of basic drip irrigation techniques and hardware helpful.
  • Organizational skills, filling, data entry, and office skills.
  • Able to communicate clearly in a variety of situations and environments.
  • People skills and an enthusiasm to engage and facilitate student learning is a must.
  • Researching and computer skills, especially Microsoft Work, Outlook and Excel programs.

Experience Minimum 2 years relevant landscape maintenance or farming experience.

Education - Certificates or other degrees in the fields of Landscape Design, Horticulture, Herbal Sciences, Permaculture or Biodynamic agriculture are helpful.
