Bastyr University is looking for a Temporary Cook to prepare Natural Foods for Kenmore Campus Dining Commons.

Responsibilities: Prepare and maintain hot foods including entrees, vegetables, sauces and condiments for the daily menu and catered events. Prepare and maintain cold foods including greens, salad bar vegetables, special salad(s), and dressings for the daily menu and catered events. Set up the salad bar for the main dining room and catering to conference dining rooms. Set up hot tables for the main dining room and conferencing as needed. Report to chef regarding any items needed for the menu. Responsible for cooking areas, seeing that they are kept clean and orderly throughout the day and at the end of the shift. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

Minimum 4 years cooking experience. Thorough knowledge of scratch cooking with a high emphasis on Plant-Based cuisine. Possess a full range of cooking techniques, including sautéing, grilling, frying, baking, vegetable preparation procedures, and correct mixing techniques for various cold preparations. Must be customer service oriented and capable of working FOH stations. Must be well groomed and capable of serving guests for fine dining plated and banquet style events, restaurant server experience preferred. Capable of following all cash handling procedures as needed for opening/closing a register till.  Must know King County Health Codes for food service, and be in possession of a Washington State Food Handlers Permit.

Skills:  Must be able to accurately identify the various stages of cooking; be proficient in the use of hand tools and commercial appliances used in quantity cooking; be proficient in cutting technique. Must be able to communicate clearly in order to work with other kitchen staff to accomplish diverse tasks in a limited time frame. Knowledge of whole foods cooking with emphasis on vegan & vegetarian, wheat free and various dietary restrictions. Knowledge of using alternate ingredients and substitutes. Needs to have a positive attitude always. Needs to be social and friendly with all students and customers. Needs to be coordinated to serve plates, platters, beverages as well as busing tables as needed for plated or banquet style catered event.  Being flexible, open to new ideas and creative is a must. Must be able to work 32 hours a week and be flexible with scheduling as it pertains to the business. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and capable of standing for long periods of time. Must possess a developed palate to taste flavors accurately. Must possess excellent knife skills.  

Salary:  $17-$19 per hour; depending on experience.
