Bastyr University seeks a Director for the Simkin Center for Allied Birth Vocations, with energy and vision to lead toward our mission to educate and inspire leaders in the childbirth professions. Simkin Center workshops prepare birth and postpartum doulas, lactation educators, childbirth educators, infant massage educators, and provide specialty training in maternal-infant health issues. The Center is an internationally recognized professional training program with three committed and passionate staff people, fifteen experienced and respected instructors and over 10,000 students from around the world since 1988 who have gained education and inspiration. Simkin Center graduates have gone on to be leaders in the field, and the Center maintains local, national and international accreditation and relationships with allied organizations in the professions. The Simkin Center Leadership Fund awards nearly $30,000 in educational scholarships annually to over 70 exceptional students annually, with the intent to increase the number of birth professionals who come from and work in underserved low income, ethnic, cultural, geographic and communities of color.

We are looking for a leader at this exciting milestone in our history to continue to advance our equity goal of a classroom free from institutionalized racism, dedicated to health and race equity and cultural awareness in supporting maternal, infant and family health. Social, educational and non-medical support in maternity care is evidence-based and increasingly relevant in health care. The Director plays a critical part in aligning team members and faculty in setting the direction, goals and strategies for our thirty year old online and onsite education program. As a department in the School of Natural Health Arts and Sciences (NHAS) of the University, the Simkin Center Director reports to the Dean and contributes to the NHAS Leadership Team, which provides collegial support, learning and inter-departmental opportunities. Position type: 

Passion for and experience in maternal-child health and birth professions issues and education. Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred. Administrative and supervisory experience in education or closely related field. Prior leadership, management, budget and supervisory experience is helpful, as well as experience with curriculum and program design, marketing and promotion


Responsibilities: The Simkin Center Director implements the mission and goals of the Center in alignment with the University’s vision, mission and strategic plan. They develop and administer departmental procedures, policies and budget. Other responsibilities include oversight of enrollment management, financial systems, marketing and work flow processes. Director recruits, hires and supervises staff people and instructors. The Director sustains relationships and partnerships within the local, national and international maternal-child health and birth communities and represents the Simkin Center in the greater university community.

Salary Range: $55,889 - $62,316. Full-time, salaried position, based on experience and qualifications. Opportunity for working some days remotely.

Comprehensive benefits package includes medical/dental/vision, 403b and Section 125 plans, and generous paid time off. Although typically a Mon-Fri position, candidates may be required to work varying hours and days of the week to accommodate event scheduling.
