Bastyr University is seeking an experienced and dedicated payroll specialist.

Compensation $22.31 - $23.25 per hour, DOE

Work Schedule: 20 hours per week, Monday - Friday, 4 hours per day

POSITION SUMMARY

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing all aspects of payroll including creating, editing, and verifying reports; maintenance of employee records, including vacation/sick leave/and holiday balances.  This position reports to the Payroll Manager.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for processing the semi-monthly payroll for Bastyr University.  Duties include:
  2. processing of electronic time records using the online timesheet 
  3. creation and editing of batches for web-based payroll application; 
  4. verifying and transmitting payroll to the vendor; 
  5. sorting and distributing paychecks / vouchers; 
  6. creating, editing, and verifying reports; 
  7. maintenance of employee records, including vacation / sick leave balances
  8. Holiday awards
  9. Responsible for assisting in the development all payroll procedures / guidelines / policies and the monitoring of policies/procedures to ensure legal compliance with federal/state payroll and IRS regulations. 
  10. Responds to questions and requests for assistance from students, faculty, staff, and managers regarding payroll data input, processing, direct deposits, and payroll deductions.
  11. Responsible for the preparation and filing various required governmental and legal reports (statistical, new hire, garnishments, state taxes, and unclaimed wages).

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ensures minimum wage compliance for all operating jurisdictions;
  2. Reports payroll errors to Manager, subjects processes changes to ensure accuracy in payroll records;
  3. Prepares and distributes monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports;
  4. Processes quarterly and annual payroll amendments and reconciliations as needed;
  5. Supports all internal and external audit requests as needed;
  6. Ensures implementation by staying abreast of compliance with any new legislation or guidelines impacting payroll (e.g., IRC, IRS publications, FLSA).

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum of 1 year experience in payroll /related area;
  2. Proven experience as payroll specialist;
  3. Must have basic understanding of accounting and fund Accounting
  4. Must know federal and state (Washington and California) regulations regarding payroll policies / procedures;
  5. Knowledge of basic accounting principles;
  6. In-depth knowledge and skill level using Microsoft applications Excel and Word;
  7. Must have knowledge of web-based payroll systems including ADP Workforce Now and/or Neo Ed
  8. High School Diploma is required and a BA/BS degree in Business Administration preferred;
  9. Proficient in MS Office

  2. Excellent attention to details and ability to perform work accurately with minimal errors.
  3. Ability to perform complex payroll duties independently.
  4. Ability to plan and execute assignments, within the finance guidelines, policies and procedures.
  5. Ability to read and interpret documentation and regulations pertaining to the job and to review relevant updates.
  6. Ability to solve problems and analyze information.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  9. Excellent communication skills

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  2. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
