The Department of Midwifery is hiring our next Preceptor Coordinator at the Bastyr University Kenmore campus. We are a hard-working, supportive team, committed to social justice; please read our Equity and Mission statements.

Are you a curious and kind human? Do you enjoy being a part of the midwifery community while also helping students connect and learn? We care deeply about training the best midwives in the nation, and invite you to become our next team member.

At Bastyr University, we educate and inspire leaders in midwifery and maternal child health systems. The Department of Midwifery is a leader in educating the very best childbirth professionals, and our program continues to grow. We offer two master’s degree programs, and are proud to see our graduates in leadership roles throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Our mission extends past our classrooms into the community of educators who oversee and facilitate our students’ clinical training. How midwives are trained is important.

The Preceptor Coordinator facilitates the preceptors’ experience in our program from inception of new sites, to preceptor continuing education, mentorship, and growth. The primary role of this person is to be the point-of-contact for all our clinical instructors and to fiercely support their experience as educators, from the smallest administrative detail to growing the program and preceptor skills. The Preceptor Coordinator promotes excellence in midwifery clinical education by coordinating with the Department of Midwifery faculty and staff to support preceptors as clinical skills instructors for our midwifery students.

  • Supporting clinical preceptors by facilitating the onboarding, experience, and ongoing support of our clinical preceptors to ensure they have an excellent experience with the Department of Midwifery from the day they are selected.
  • Assessing training sites continuously to ensure they meet the highest quality standards at all times.
  • Discovering and cultivating new clinical training sites through outreach, networking, marketing, active listening to students and clinicians, brainstorming, and using social media.
  • Paying attention to procedural detail including, but not limited to: ensuring department policies and procedures are followed for preceptor credentialing and current Educational Affiliation Agreements, and maintaining accurate online records for all clinical training sites.
  • Curating professional development opportunities for preceptors including new programs, incentives, and educational opportunities to engage preceptors in the Department mission, and to provide continual improvement in the delivery of our program.
  • Addressing equity issues by understanding the ways in which micro-aggressions and power dynamics impact the student and preceptor experience, and actively employing the Department’s mission of equity when giving feedback to and developing preceptors.
  • Be based in Kenmore, WA, have a vehicle, and be willing and able to travel to network with current and prospective preceptors (approximately 25% of the time, as needed)
  • Possess the ability to multitask, prioritize, and complete tasks and projects occasionally with little to no guidance
  • Have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to represent Bastyr University professionally and positively to a wide variety of people
  • Demonstrate excellent judgment, discretion, sensitivity, and clarity when dealing with students and clinicians in times of stress and involving confidential or sensitive information
  • Provide and accept feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement and development of the program
  • Make smart and timely decisions, understanding when to take ownership of a decision and when to involve other parties
  • Work well independently and collaboratively as a part of a small department of dedicated and passionate individuals

The Preceptor Coordinator must possess good communication skills, both verbal and written, be able to maintain calm and organization in the midst of rapidly expanding and changing needs, be collaborative, proactive, and a strong problem solver. This person must be able to produce reports and correspondence using Microsoft Office products. This position requires strong computer and internet skills and a high-speed internet connection.
