The Simkin Center seeks Lecturers to teach specific topics in the Birth and Postpartum Doula Skills Workshops.  We are looking for experienced doulas and childbirth educators who may be interested in a pathway toward becoming educators. Feedback and coaching by experienced instructors is a benefit to this position.

Responsibilities:  Prepare and teach assigned lecture topics at scheduled workshops.  Meet the pre-set session learning objectives using methods and teaching aids of your choosing.  Scheduled times/dates for teaching are flexible based on your availability.

Possible lecture topics for Birth Doula Workshop include:

  • Communication Skills for Doulas

  • Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health in Maternity Care

  • Current Trends in Maternity Care

  • Events of Late Pregnancy

  • Stages of Labor and Birth and Postpartum

  • Client Interviews and Prenatal Visits

  • Breastfeeding/Chestfeeding

  • Complications of Pregnancy, Labor and Birth and Medical Interventions

  • Pain Medications and Supporting People with an Epidural

  • Cesarean Birth and VBAC

  • Doula Lifestyle

  • Postpartum Visits with Birth Clients

  • Unexpected Events and the Doula

Simkin Center

Minimum of two years as a birth doula. Evidence of active participation within doula community, organizations, programs and associations. Understanding of doula standards of practice and code of ethics. Background as an educator is a plus. It helps if you are certified or on path toward certification. Be willing and available to observe specific topic sessions, on your own time, to help you prepare to teach.
