April is Stress Awareness Month

Published
Stress is a natural part of life, but when left unchecked, it can take a toll on both our mental and physical well-being. That’s why April is recognized as Stress Awareness Month, a time to bring attention to the impact of stress and explore effective ways to manage it. In honor of this, Bastyr University clinics invites you to a free virtual talk on April 7, "Ways to Recognize and Manage Your Stress," led by Dr. Jennifer Pfeuffer, PsyD, core psychology faculty at Bastyr University.
Dr. Pfeuffer will guide participants through practical techniques to help recognize and manage stress more effectively. The discussion will cover:
-
Understanding Common Stressors – Learn how everyday situations contribute to stress and how to identify triggers in your own life.
-
The Mind-Body Connection – Explore how stress impacts both mental and physical health, and why recognizing symptoms early can be key to managing them.
-
Breathing Techniques for Immediate Relief – Discover how deep breathing exercises can help regulate the body and reduce stress instantly.
-
Movement and Stress Reduction – Understand the role of physical activity in increasing blood flow, boosting endorphins, and promoting relaxation.
-
Activating the Parasympathetic Nervous System – Learn strategies to shift from a state of stress to a state of calm using simple, natural methods.
Health Tip: Try This Simple Breathing Exercise
One of the easiest ways to manage stress is through deep breathing. Try this Box Breathing Technique to promote relaxation:
-
Find a quiet space: Sit or lie down comfortably in a quiet environment.
-
Close your eyes (optional): This can help you focus on your breath.
-
Inhale slowly: Breathe in deeply through your nose, counting to four slowly.
-
Hold your breath: Hold your breath for a count of four.
-
Exhale slowly: Breathe out slowly through your mouth, counting to four.
-
Hold your breath: Hold your breath again for a count of four.
-
Repeat: Continue this cycle for several rounds, focusing on the sensation of your breath.
This exercise helps regulate the nervous system, increase focus, and create a sense of calm. Try it during stressful moments or before bed to promote relaxation.
