Feeling Run-Down? How IV Therapy Can Help You Rehydrate, Recharge, and Recover

IV Therapy

Published

You’ve probably seen IV therapy clinics popping up in wellness centers around San Diego or heard friends talk about a ‘glutathione push, vitamin B12 shot, or Vitamin C drip.’ But what’s behind the hype?

IV therapy is medical procedure that involves administering fluids or nutrients directly into the bloodstream using a needle or catheter. An IM shot is an intramuscular injection given directly into the muscle which allows a nutrient, such as B12, to be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream since muscles have a rich blood supply. IV’s and IM injections are generally well tolerated with little to no side effects.

Why choose IV therapy at Bastyr University Clinic (BUC)?

Our newly renovated IV suite is home to five comfortable treatment chairs and is also considered a USP 797 Certified “Clean Room”. This USP certification has developed specific standards for preparing compounded sterile medications in order to maximize patient benefit and reduce risks such as contamination, infection or incorrect dosing. This ensures we will be delivering only safe and effective therapies during your visit with us.

Here is a list of common indications based on our Bastyr menu:

  • Rehydration boost: after travel, illness or exercise

  • Correcting iron deficiency: iron infusion

  • Immune support: glutathione, Vitamin C, NAD

  • Adjunctive cancer care: Vitamin C, glutathione

  • Athletic performance improvement: Meyer’s Cocktail

Additionally, you will receive treatment in a calm and collaborative space where naturopathic student providers work alongside a supervising Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Resident ND. These students and supervisors work together on your case and decide which IV (intravenous) or IM (intramuscular) concoction is right for your body based on your medical history and a comprehensive intake. Following your personalized consultation and IV insertion, people generally relax (read, listen to music, nap) during the duration of their treatment (generally 30-60 mins). People generally leave feeling hydrated, refreshed and energized.

Although the prices of most of our injection and IV therapies are comparable to other clinics in San Diego, our pricing for intramuscular Vitamin B-12 injections are significantly more affordable at $45 per injection and similarly, the IV Glutathione push is only $65. At the BUC clinic we also offer affordable pricing for other high-quality services such as naturopathic care, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, physical medicine, and biofeedback. As a note IV/IM therapy should complement, not replace, medical care.

Curious whether IV therapy could help you feel your best? Please note, a referral is often necessary — patients must have an initial intake with an ND practitioner or follow-up visit within the last 3 months. Additionally, specific lab work (ordered by your practitioner) should also be completed 30 days prior to receiving IV therapy.
