MEDI-CAL ORDERING, REFERRING, and PRESCRIBING (ORP) PROVIDERS

Medi-Cal is a health insurance program that provides coverage to qualified individuals in California. While services and visits to Bastyr University Clinic are never covered by Medi-Cal, many Bastyr University Clinic practitioners may order covered lab tests and imaging studies, refer to specialists, or prescribe select medicines for Medi-Cal Members. These ordering, referring, or prescribing (ORP) providers do not submit claims directly to Medi-Cal for reimbursement for the services they provide, and Medi-Cal program does not reimburse the ORP provider for services provided directly to Medi-Cal members. However, the labs, imaging studies and prescriptions submitted by Bastyr ORP providers may be covered by Medi-Cal.

Covered by Medi-Cal Plan*:

• Basic lab tests via Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics
• X-Rays and ultrasounds
• Prescription medications
• Referrals to specialists (eg Cardiologist, Dermatologist)

*Be sure to check with your Medi-Cal insurance plan on the specifics of your plan coverage including preferred drugs, prior approvals, and partner labs.

Not Covered by Medi-Cal Plan:

• Office visits
• IV Therapies
• Teas, tinctures and flower essences
• Nutritional supplements
• Physical medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, counseling, biofeedback

Q: Will my Medi-Cal plan cover my office visit with a Bastyr University Clinic provider?

A: No. All office visit fees are out of pocket expenses and are collected at the time of service.

Q: Will my Medi-Cal plan cover a prescription written by an ORP provider at Bastyr University Clinic?

A: Yes. Select prescription medicines will be covered by Medi-Cal as long as the prescribing doctor is ORP provider, and the medicine is on the Medi-Cal plan preferred drug list or plan formulary.

Q: Will my Medi-Cal plan cover laboratory tests ordered by an ORP provider at Bastyr University Clinic?

A: Yes. Basic laboratory tests will be covered by Medi-Cal if the prescribing doctor is an ORP provider, tests are medically indicated and are done at a laboratory designated in your Medi-Cal plan.
