The otherworldly beauty of the aurora borealis is the spark for our holiday concert. From medieval chant and traditional carols to dazzling works by Arvo Pärt, Ola Gjeilo, and Veljo Tormis, you’ll journey through a thousand years of ethereal Baltic and Nordic choral music. In our centerpiece, Northern Lights by Ēriks Ešenvalds, voices, chimes, and tuned water goblets combine to evoke the spectacle of the aurora.

Of note: Our performances of Northern Lights at Bastyr University Chapel will be sung-through, and will not include any spoken introductions to the pieces after our welcome message; we will ask the audience to hold applause until the end of the concert. These concerts will be recorded.

Our performances of Northern Lights at Seattle First Baptist Church will include introductions from choir members and Karen P. Thomas, and audience members will be encouraged to applaud as they are moved to do so.

Northwest Boychoir: Our performance of Northern Lights at 3:00pm at Seattle First Baptist Church will open with a short performance by the Northwest Boychoir, Apprentices. The Northwest Boychoir, Apprentices are members of the training program that prepares choristers for advancement into the highly acclaimed Northwest Boychoir. This choir of boys ages 7 – 11 maintains an active performance schedule, as well as twice weekly rehearsals as part of their musical training. The Northwest Boychoir, Apprentices have performed with the Seattle Symphony in their Family Series, Holiday Pops concert and annual Holiday Musical Salute. The Choir has also participated in Mateo Messina’s annual benefit concert for Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Snowman Foundation’s Ten Grands at Benaroya Hall. The Apprentices regularly perform for numerous civic and private events, including Providence O'Christmas Trees and Winterfest. For 50 years, the Northwest Boychoir’s musical sophistication has earned its reputation as one of the nation’s premier choir programs. The top-level Northwest Boychoir is especially popular during the holiday season for its A Festival of Lessons & Carols concert series which has become a Northwest Holiday Tradition for thousands of families in the Puget Sound region. To see this special performance, attend our 3:00pm concert at Seattle First Baptist Church on December 20.
