Fulfill your doula breastfeeding education in this self-paced learning program. 60 Days of access to online modules and a printable certificate upon completion.

Breastfeeding for Doulas is a self-paced and self-directed online course designed for birth and/or postpartum doulas.  It can also be entry level education for anyone interested in lactation.  It is focused on the doula role and scope and features presentations, videos and resources, as well as opportunities for reflection and inquiry. 

Learning modules include:

  • The Role of the Doula in Supporting Breastfeeding
  • Introduction to Breastfeeding
  • Strong Foundations: Supporting Breastfeeding Prenatally
  • Successful Starts: Supporting Breastfeeding Immediately After Birth
  • Early Days: Establishing a Breastfeeding Relationship
  • Breastfeeding Challenges: Supporting Client Navigation
  • Beyond the First Month: Longer Term Breastfeeding Support
  • Breastfeeding Resources for Learning and Sharing

You’ll also learn about the significance of breastfeeding, social impacts and inequities in breastfeeding rates and support, how doulas influence the quality of client perinatal experiences from the unique relationship doulas have with their clients, and keys for breastfeeding success.

Faculty: Joy MacTavish, MA, IBCLC, RLC, ICCE, CD(DONA), is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, certified childbirth educator, internationally certified birth doula, and certified postpartum doula. She serves on the faculty at the Simkin Center as the Instructor and originator of the Breastfeeding for Doulas online course. She is a lactation consultant in private practice in Seattle.
