He received his doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine in 1985 from Bastyr University where he has been a member of the clinical and academic faculty. He has had articles published in medical journals, has contributed chapters to theTextbook of Natural Medicine and has authored two books: The Face of Consciousness: A Guide To Self-Identity And Healing and Dancing With The Beloved: Resurrecting Divine Sexuality Through Profound Relatedness. Nigel Plummer, PhD
Dr. Plummer received his doctorate in microbial physiology from the University of Surrey, London, England and has worked at Pfizer in antibiotic research and development.; His research on the use of normal flora in the prevention and treatment of genito-urinary candidiasis has won him numerous awards. Dr. Plummer continues his solid commitment to research throughout his career in collaboration with research institutes and universities within the UK and Europe, developing an extensive knowledge specializing in probiotics, natural antimicrobials and fish oils.

Dr. Plummer’s probiotic research involves:

  • The role of probiotics in the modulation of the gastrointestinal microbiota and the prevention of antibiotic resistance post antibiotic therapy
  • The role of probiotics in the prevention of Clostridium difficile diarrhoeal infections
  • The role of probiotics in the control of IBS symptoms
  • The role of probiotics in the prevention of allergy – modulation of the neonatal intestinal microbiota to minimize the incidence of atopic eczema and subsequent asthma development.
  • The role of probiotics in candidiasis

In addition, much work has been completed both historically and novel research programs have been initiated into:

  • Research with natural antimicrobials leading to the development of a natural, non-antibiotic based growth promoter for the agricultural sector
  • The use of plant antimicrobials in combination with probiotics for the prevention of traveler's diarrhea and candidal infections
  • Research into the role of plant antimicrobials in the prevention of parasitic infections (Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidial infections) and MRSA infections

Research with both fish and plant derived omega-3 oils has led to the development of a range of highly palatable oil emulsion products that facilitate meaningful daily intakes of the omega-3s.

The omega-3 research involves:

  • The benefits of emulsification enhancing fatty acid absorption
  • The role of omega-3s and phytosterols in the modulation of serum cholesterol levels in adults and children
  • The role of omega-3s in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease
  • The role of the combination of omega-3s and plant extracts in the prevention of osteoarthritis and joint damage

Dr. Plummer lectures extensively in North America and the UK/Europe and has developed an interest in the concept of fetal disease programming, the controlling factors involved and the potential to influence programmed events as a means of prevention of chronic disease development.
