Associate Vice President of Human Resources


Bastyr University seeks a seasoned professional to serve as the Associate Vice President of Human Resources (AVPHR) to achieve its mission and strategic goals.  Bastyr University, located near Seattle, Washington, is a regionally accredited, multi-disciplinary institution for higher education and research in the natural health sciences.  Founded as a naturopathic medical school in 1978, enrollment now reaches 1200 students in a broad range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs in the natural health and applied behavioral sciences. Bastyr University–California (BUC), including the BUC Clinic, located in San Diego, California was successfully opened in the Fall of 2012.  The Bastyr Center for Natural Health is located in Seattle, Washington. In all locations, Bastyr University enjoys close proximity to breathtaking marine and mountain environments, an abundance of cultural, educational and recreational opportunities. 

The AVPHR will be located on Bastyr’s Kenmore, Washington campus and serves as the chief human resources officer for Bastyr University locations in Washington and California.   This position directs the Human Resources Office and provides strategic and day-to-day oversight for organizational development and institutional HR policies. The AVPHR is responsible for other programs including employee relations, staff and leadership development, benefits, implementation of personnel policies and procedures, recruitment and orientation, payroll, faculty and staff compensation, performance management systems, compliance issues and personnel records. The AVPHR reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration/CFO and also serves as a member of the President’s Executive Team.    

This position develops and manages the annual HR budget and supervises four FTE HR staff. The AVPHR has authority to approve health insurance claims, workers’ compensation premiums, unemployment premiums, life and supplemental insurance premiums, charge recruiting expenses to appropriate departmental accounts, and monitors institutional staff budget lines for staffing expenses. This position is also responsible for oversight and administration of the University’s retirement program. The position oversees the processing, tracking and analysis of employee health insurance premiums/expenses, reserve funds and fixed costs associated with the University’s partially self-Insured health benefits plan. This position provides oversight of various expense projections in conjunction with staff and faculty compensation planning and analyzes, forecasts, and implements annual staff and faculty salary adjustments.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Five or more years of demonstrated, progressively responsible HR management experience that includes: employee supervision, benefits and compensation administration, budget development and management, recruitment and retention, employee relations, training, payroll, policy development/implementation, compliance issue management and organizational development.
  • Effectively managing disciplinary issues, employee grievance resolution and termination process.
  • Excellent oral and written skills as well as experience with Windows Office.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Human Resources Management or related field or equivalent combination of education, training and work experience is required.  

Preferred Requirements: 

  • Previous Human Resources experience in higher education, health organization, or other non-profit is desirable.
  • Expertise in benefits and compensation program development and administration, employee relations, payroll administration, and employment law compliance.
  • Knowledge of the employment relationship in higher education as it pertains to faculty is desirable.
  • Compensation modeling including position classifications and benchmarking.
  • Working knowledge of California and Washington employment law and their application to HR issues.
  • Organizational Development experience.
  • Master’s degree and/or specialized training desirable.
  • PHR or SPHR desirable. 

Work Schedule:  The regular hours for this full time position are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the organization or business unit. Occasional travel as required. ADA/OSHA:  This job description defines the essential job duties of this position. Salary Range: DOE. This is a full-time, exempt, salaried position. Salary is based on experience and qualifications.
